Professional Placements with CECA members for students studying on MSc courses in Civil Engineering and Building Surveying
Kingston University now runs a number of MSc courses where an industry placement is an integral part of the course. The main purpose of the professional placement is for the student to acquire additional industrial skills, thus enhancing their prospects finding relevant employment and improving the quality of the workforce in the industry.
The required duration of the placement is between 10 to 12 months and should provide an ideal opportunity for the student to either work on fixed term projects or cover such things as maternity/paternity leave. The courses likely to be of interest to CECA members are:
- Management Construction (Civil Engineering)
- Management Construction
- Building Surveying
- Quantity Surveying
- Structural Design and Construction Management
- Structural Design and Construction Management with Sustainability
Taking on an MSc placement student also provides an excellent recruitment opportunity allowing companies to evaluate a student’s qualities and their contribution to their company and consider future employment possibilities with that student.
There are two intakes. Students, who begin their course in September start their placements between May and June of the following year and for students who start their course in January placement must begin in January of the next year. The deadline to secure approved placement for September starters is 1 May; deadline for the January intake is 1 December. There is an expectation that student will be paid for the duration of the placement, at least at the minimum rate.
The application process for placement students has been made as straightforward as possible. Companies can place their advertisement directly here and this enables students to apply directly to the company. There is no cost to advertise the vacancy. Alternatively, KU can offer managed recruitment, shortlisting the applicants and conducting interviews at Kingston University.
Placement support officers are available throughout the year to provide support to the employer, as required. While on placement, student will also have an academic tutor, who will arrange at least one visit to meet with the student and his/her manager.
