“Following the positive feedback that was received since our last issue in January 2023, we are pleased to share an update to our Major Capital Scheme brochure, which sets out our works programme and future pipeline. This is ahead of the annual meeting with CECA Southern, which is scheduled for Wednesday 8th November 2023.
In light of the overall financial position of Kent County Council, we, like many other Local Authorities, have an overriding priority to deliver a financial recovery plan over the next two years. This has been captured in a Budget Recovery Strategy ‘Securing Kent’s Future’ which sets out our plan to secure a sustainable financial position, whilst maintaining priorities such as New Models of Care and Support for our residents.
In spite of the above, we are still attracting significant amounts of external funding to boost our Highways Capital Programme, which is helpful to provide further confidence in what we hope to deliver. This includes success through the Levelling Up Fund Round 2, with £123m awarded to the County for various transport and regeneration projects. The government is likely to set out the process for the third and final round of the Levelling Up Fund before the Autumn Statement on 22nd November 2023, which may then provide us with further opportunities to fund important pipeline schemes in Kent. Although the Prime Minister announced that the majority of the £36bn saving from HS2 would be focused on smaller transport improvements in the north and midlands, we understand that there is also likely to be funding to deliver schemes in the Southeast and Kent in particular.
So there are lots of topics to discuss and, as with previous publications, we are keen to gauge interest in the schemes we have presented. Please do get in touch with your thoughts.
