Exploring careers in infrastructure with insights from industry professionals

As part of National Careers Week, we are shining a light on the career opportunities within the infrastructure sector across the Midlands. From management to cost analysis, the industry offers a selection of roles that contribute to the region’s growth and development. We spoke to two professionals at different stages of their careers – Lynsey Cunnington and Ryan Bristow – to gain insights into their journeys, challenges, and advice for those considering a future in the industry.

A career in operations management: Lynsey’s journey

Lynsey Cunningham of Kier Transportation

Lynsey is a 40-year-old service delivery manager, at Kier Transportation, on the Birmingham Highways Maintenance contract. Lynsey plays a crucial role in directing day-to-day operations, ensuring the smooth management of network assets, and collaborating with Birmingham City Council (BCC) and key stakeholders. Her responsibilities include overseeing health and safety, managing emergency responses, and optimising efficiency across projects.

Having spent eight years in a quality & performance role before transitioning into her current position, Lynsey has utilised her skills to drive service improvements. She says, “My work makes a difference by improving service delivery and driving efficiencies.”

Like many professionals, Lynsey has faced challenges, particularly in implementing new processes. “There’s always uncertainty around change, but I’ve overcome it through team meetings and Q&A sessions, ensuring everyone is informed and involved.”

Her advice for those interested in operations management? “Get out on-site and experience the challenges firsthand. Understanding the practical aspects will give you a deeper appreciation of the work.”

What Lynsey loves most about her job is the variety – no two days are the same. She highlights communication, problem-solving, and strategic thinking as essential skills for success in her role.

A different pathway into quantity surveying: Ryan’s experience

Ryan Bristow of Beaver Bridges

Ryan is a 23-year-old quantity surveyor at Beaver Bridges. Ryan took a less conventional route into his career as a quantity surveyor. After completing a Law degree at Lancaster University, he was introduced to the construction industry through a friend and found himself drawn to the problem-solving and negotiation aspects. Ryan says, “My legal background provided a strong foundation for understanding contracts and managing costs, which are essential to quantity surveying.”

Ryan sees his role as crucial in ensuring projects are delivered efficiently. “By working closely with clients and project teams, I help navigate obstacles, ensuring that projects progress smoothly and meet the needs of the community.”

When it comes to challenges, Ryan has faced issues and negotiations around compensation events. His approach is careful: “I identify the risks, propose alternative solutions, and work towards agreements that suit all parties.”

For those considering a career in quantity surveying, Ryan’s biggest piece of advice is simple: “Always ask questions. The more you learn, the more effective you’ll be. Expanding your knowledge helps when assessing projects, contracts, and compensation events.”

Ryan likes many parts of his job, but his favourite is the contractual aspects. Ryan says he enjoys breaking down complex agreements, negotiating terms, and ensuring fairness in contracts.

Ryan says: “It’s rewarding to know that the agreements I help put in place contribute to successful project delivery.”

Ryan highlights analytical thinking, problem-solving, negotiation, and time management as key skills for a quantity surveyor. He also emphasises the importance of developing technical knowledge over time.
