CECA Y&H Foundations Group get their hands (gloves) dirty!

CECA Yorkshire & Humber Foundations Group were delighted to support a local conservation project last week, as part of their commitment to environmental sustainability and making a difference across the Region.

The Lower Ure Conservation Trust is a charity dedicated to the restoration of once productive sand and gravel quarries to varied, wildlife-rich habitats. LUCT run the Nosterfield Nature Reserve in North Yorkshire, which is part of Tarmac’s Nosterfield Quarry.

After being approached by Tarmac to help deliver a volunteering day, our Foundations Group volunteers grasped the opportunity with both hands and the day was organised by our very own Jennifer Patel (Business Support Officer, CECA Y&H) and Matthew Roulson (Foundations Group Chair, ESH).

We had 10 volunteers on the day, helping to clear overgrown tree areas around the local lakes, which will allow wildlife to create nesting areas over the coming years. From 9.30am to 3.30pm, the team did not stop unless it was to take on incredibly important hydration (Yorkshire tea of course!) and it was fantastic to see everyone happy to get stuck in.

The LUCT organisers were incredibly impressed by the group, stating that this team were the most effective and efficient group of volunteers they had ever had, which isn’t a surprise as we had a team of problem-solving, hands-on, civil engineers at our disposal. When they were told they only had enough time to clear a 50 metre section of trees and scrubland, this was clearly a challenge and by lunchtime the group were asking ‘where next?’.

We will be looking to deliver more of these conservation and volunteering days throughout 2025, so if you or your company would like to get involved, or if you have a local project that would benefit from this type of support, please contact Jennifer.Patel@ceca-yorks.co.uk.
