Civils contractors today welcomed the UK construction industry’s nine point plan to deliver net zero carbon in the industry by 2050 and said it was both ‘achievable’ and ‘necessary.’
The Construction Leadership Council has published CO2nstruct Zero, a nine-point plan that will drive carbon out of all parts of the construction sector and enable the industry to play its part in delivering the UK Government’s objective of net zero for the whole economy by 2050.
Commenting, Chief Executive of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Alasdair Reisner said: “Achieving net zero in construction is the single greatest challenge our sector will face in this century.
“The construction industry must adapt to a net zero future, not only to address the threat of climate change, but to modernise and keep up with our international competitors.
“This will require a whole-industry strategic approach, which is why we fully support the role of the Construction Leadership Council in spearheading this vital initiative.
“The CLC is in the process of developing measurable targets to monitor how the industry is moving towards net zero over the coming years, and it is the responsibility of everyone working in UK construction to get behind this initiative and deliver the net zero carbon economy of the future.”
