The UK’s civil engineering contractors today said that the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to ‘transform’ UK infrastructure delivery.
Responding to the UK Government’s ‘AI Opportunities Action Plan’, published today, Director of Operations for the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Marie-Claude Hemming said: “The development of AI has the potential to radically transform the UK infrastructure sector, provided our industry is primed to take full advantage of this technology.
“CECA has been undertaking research in this field which we plan to publish in the Spring, to coincide with a major AI in infrastructure conference – which will be free for all those working in the built environment – taking place in March.
“We have been working with our members to understand both the risks and opportunities AI might offer, and how its successful roll-out can speed up infrastructure delivery, optimise planning, and boost economic growth.
“The UK has clear advantages in the race to deploy AI, not least through our world-leading universities and our position as a market leader in its development.
“Today’s announcement – that the UK Government will throw the full weight of Whitehall behind AI with the development of AI Growth Zones – is to be welcomed, and it must act as a starting-gun for our sector to embrace the opportunities AI offers.
“We look forward to working with CECA members, the UK Government, and other stakeholders, to ensure not only that the infrastructure required to support AI is delivered at speed, but that our industry is primed to take full advantage of the benefits this technology will bring.
“AI has the potential to benefit contractors of all sizes, from optimising the planning system for major projects, to allowing SMEs to maximise business efficiency – all of which will ultimately benefit the economy and the UK taxpayer.
“Infrastructure must be at the forefront of the AI revolution to deliver growth and support businesses and communities in all parts of the country.
“The UK Government has recognised the fundamental importance of AI to securing the economy, and it is time to make sure our sector is fully on board in embracing the AI revolution in the coming years.”
