Civil engineering contractors today welcomed the announcements made in the first King’s Speech of the Labour Government.
With a bumper legislative list published, CECA members welcomed the focus on investing in our infrastructure demonstrated in the announcement of Bills including the National Wealth Bill, the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, the Railways Bill, the Great British Energy Bill and the drive to create the skills to deliver it via the Skills England Bill.
Commitment to further empowering and strengthening local communities and regions was also welcomed, as the English Devolution Bill and revised High Speed Rail (Crewe to Manchester) Bill – which aims to improve east to west connectivity across the north of England was also published.
Commenting, Director of Operations Marie-Claude Hemming said: “Today’s announcement demonstrates that the new Government has taken public concern on board and is committed to delivering improved infrastructure, fit for a twenty first century society.
“The challenge now is ensuring this bumper volume of legislation is adequately scrutinised and delivered within Parliamentary timeframes.
“As ever, the Civil Engineering Contractors Association stand ready to support our policy makers in ensuring that together we can deliver the world class infrastructure our country so desperately needs.”
