Civils contractors today welcomed the news that development consent has been given to the A303 Stonehenge Project and said that the scheme will be vital in boosting the economy of the South West.
The project will involve constructing a new section of dual carriageway to address problems associated with the single carriageway section of the A303 between Amesbury’s Countess roundabout and the dual carriageway section to the west of Winterbourne Stoke.
Commenting, Director of External Affairs for the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Marie-Claude Hemming said: “The current proximity of the A303 to Stonehenge and the associated problems of congestion are holding back the potential of the whole economy of South West England.
“This scheme will cut congestion, shorten journey times, and act as a catalyst for economic growth.
“By creating a high-quality and reliable route between the South West and the South East, this project will not only help conserve and enhance the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge by making it easier to reach and explore, but will enable growth in jobs and housing by boosting connectivity across the whole region.”
