The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (North West) has called on Chancellor Sajid Javid MP to unleash investment in infrastructure in its region.
CECA NW has said that the Government must press ahead with HS2 in its entirety, as well as deliver Northern Powerhouse Rail, build a world-class roads network, and make a renewed commitment to new nuclear power.
Commenting, CECA North West Director Guy Lawson said: “The Government must now take steps to deliver on its promises and unleash investment in a range of schemes to level up the economy and deliver growth in the North West.
“The Government’s priorities must include the full delivery of HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail, which will transform the economic geography of the North West, creating new opportunities for businesses and communities alike.
“In terms of targeted investment, we would like to see a commitment to upgrading the Cumbria coast rail line, which would support the new mine near Whitehaven, as well as opening up other employment opportunities in West Cumbria.
“Furthermore, the North West has a concentration of companies and workers with world-leading capability in the delivery and operation of nuclear power. For this reason, we would like to see the Government make a further commitment to nuclear new build, by choosing a preferred bidder for Moorside nuclear power station.
“CECA North West members are poised to deliver schemes across the roads, rail, utilities, and electricity sectors, which will create jobs and drive growth in our region.
“If the Government gets its spending decisions on North West infrastructure right, they are poised to deliver on a transformative agenda which will transform the region, allowing it to become an economic powerhouse in its own right.”
